Applying for Financial Aid
Most forms of assistance require completion of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). An exception to this would be scholarships for incoming students, which is a function of the Admissions Office at Truman State University. The FAFSA determines financial need for the Federal student aid programs, and results are reviewed by the Financial Aid Office.
To meet early filing deadlines, the FAFSA should be completed as soon as possible after January 1 for the coming year. Campus-based aid programs (Perkins Loans, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, and Work-Study) are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Pell Grants and
Direct Stafford and PLUS Loans are processed all year; however, early application assures the availability of funds when classes start. The FAFSA may be completed using estimated income, if necessary, to meet deadlines. Corrections can be made when taxes are filed. Information regarding Missouri state funding is online at the Missouri Department of Higher Education (www.dhe.mo.gov) website.
The quickest way to apply for federal aid is online through the Web at www.fafsa.ed.gov/. Both new and renewal applicants can complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid by accessing this site. New applicants must apply for a pin number to sign the FAFSA on-line. If you are a dependent student, one parent (whose information is on the FAFSA) will need a pin number to sign the application electronically also. Your e-mail for the pin number may come back to you from the U.S. Department of Education or from firstname.lastname@example.org.
Remember that up to ten colleges can receive the results of the aid application by listing the school code on the FAFSA. Schools listed will receive the results electronically. The school code for Truman is 002495. The student will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) to check for errors, correct if necessary and keep for their records. This SAR will come via e-mail as long as you provided an e-mail address on your aid application. Please note the e-mail notice will come from The U.S. Department of Education. If you have a filter on your e-mail you may want to set it to accept this e-mail address so it does not go into your junk mail.
Upon receiving a valid FAFSA, the Financial Aid Office will send upperclassmen an email directing the students to TruView to view and accept/decline the financial aid awards offered. Freshmen will receive a paper award letter giving login instructions to TruView and the access to accept/decline their awards.
